An Inquiry: I’ll think about something over and over and over and I can’t stop. How can I fix this?
How We Would Respond: Your concern energizes, and reinforces, the thinking you say you’d like to stop. If you were to stop labeling your thinking as something problematic, as something that is a cause for concern, the thinking would lose its charge and have much less of an impact upon you.
So there is your thinking, the thoughts that come into your awareness, and there is your belief that the thoughts in your awareness are something to be feared. Your belief that your thinking represents a threat to your well-being makes the thinking significant.
Your conviction that your thinking is a serious problem is what makes your thinking a serious problem… for you.
